About the Movie

This is a thirteen-minute movie on the development of the vertebrate limb and the pioneering work of Dr. John Saunders, who laid the foundation for our understanding of pattern formation in the vertebrate limb. The vertebrate limb has three axes of polarity: a proximal-distal axis, an anterior-posterior axis, and a dorsal-ventral axis. In his pioneering work on limb development, Saunders asked questions about this polarity, how are the axes of the limb established, when are they established, and what tissues are involved in transmitting positional information? With diagrams and video footage of some of Saunders’ actual grafting experiments and tissue manipulations, this movie shows how Dr. Saunders and his co-workers unraveled the complex story of pattern formation in the limb and provided the framework for the molecular studies that followed.
